A plane with 17 passengers and 2 crew members crashed into a crowded residential area in Goma shortly after take off. The Dornier 228-200 was at full capacity and was headed for the city of Beni, 350 km (220 miles) to the north when it went down. There are at least 9 casualties on the ground.
Goma was given the title of the World’s Most Dangerous City (as per this 2011 post that is a recommended read – we were going to fly this route) for reasons this didn’t include the poor safety record of their airlines.

I just read your old article re safety in Goma. Do you know about the harvesting of methane from lake Kivu? Rwanda seems to be doing well in their recovery from the horrors of the genocide. Lauren was there last summer.
I heard about the gas recovery project from one of my limo passengers. He’s a professor of marine biology, retired from UW. He goes to Africa periodically to consult on projects there.

Bens in Congo
Yes, there is a lot of potential for energy extraction there. Like you say, it is fascinating stuff. I understand though that the political issue is that Rwanda is doing all the extraction. There is a similar dynamic for oil drilling in Lake Albert with Uganda. The lack of political stability has prevented viable Congo entities from being involved with the activities to the same extent as their neighbouring countries which creates a level of tension. Fortunately in Lake Kivu there is so much gas that Congo doesn’t need to worry about Rwanda taking it all! Hopefully Congo can soon get better access as it is a relatively clean source of energy.
